Jaxtr and MagicJack testing begins in Missouri – Part 4

For part four of our test we configured magicJack over a wireless connection like you would find at an internet cafe, McDonalds, or Barnes and Noble. We have that setup in our labs, so we started the test. Test bed items consisted of a weak 2.0 GHz Intel Celeron computer running only 512 meg of RAM and Windows XP. The wireless device was a USB Motorola WU830G which has been knocked quite a bit in reviews over the years. We never had a problem with ours. The wireless router is a Buffalo Airstation without encryption hooked to DSL via a Kingston switch running at 10/100/1000. All cables were Cat5 and Cat6.
After establishing a good connection to the router and we plugged in the magicJack USB cable. Windows XP said it found a USB phone by TigerJet. Then we lost our IP address and connectivity. After four cycles of that, and numerous reboots, we had a solid connection while both the Motorola and magicJack USB cables were hooked up. One thing you will find with magicJack is that the software will try to open your browser to get the newest fixes and upgrades, even if your computer has no internet connectivity. After we restablished an internet connection we refreshed the browser and got the magicJack upgrade.
Calls were good, but again we had to increase the telephone volume (microphone side) of magicJack from the default. We watched the lights on the switch, router, and DSL modem as the calls took place. There is some data going back and forth, but the calls were clear, without static, and there was no degradation. We also connected two office computers to the network, one server, an additional router, and a VoIP Grandstream box, all without any problems. The server runs a 1000 Mbps connection while all other hardwired network components ran at 100 Mbps. The Motorola wireless connected a 54Mbps. All is good, even while everyone else in the office worked their normal routines.
In the morning we will try various calls to and from Jaxtr, but for tonight we are calling it quits. Everyone is hungry and I cannot afford the pizzas.
